West Indies have revealed their 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with Rovman Powell taking charge as the captain for the prestigious tournament. The Caribbean nations, co-hosting the event with the USA, have assembled a formidable lineup aiming for success on home soil.
Shamar Joseph, following his impressive Test debut against Australia, earns a well-deserved spot in the T20I squad, poised to mark his debut in the shortest format of the game. Meanwhile, Shimron Hetmyer’s return after missing the T20I series against Australia adds depth to the batting lineup, with his stellar IPL performances highlighting his form.
Notable omissions include Kyle Mayers and Oshane Thomas, as the Windies prioritize a lower-order batter and a balanced bowling attack. The top-order positions are expected to be filled by Johnson Charles, Brandon King, and Shai Hope, complemented by a power-packed middle-order featuring Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Powell, Jason Holder, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd.
Akeal Hossain and Gudakesh Motie provide spin-bowling options, while the pace battery will be led by vice-captain Joseph, supported by Alzarri Joseph.
Director of West Indies Cricket, Desmond Haynes, emphasized the importance of selecting players based on their defined roles within the team. He highlighted the tough decisions made regarding the selection of Hetmyer over Mayers, focusing on bolstering the batting depth down the order.
The Windies, part of Group C alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda, commence their campaign on June 2 against Papua New Guinea in Guyana.
Teams have until May 25 to make any changes to their squad, subject to approval from the ICC’s Event Technical Committee.
